Cromwell, CT — May 24, 2025 — Connecticut motorists will be seeing green this holiday weekend as gas prices are significantly lower this year than last year at this time.
According to AAA, the average price of gasoline in Connecticut is $3.12 per gallon—that’s 64 cents lower than last year’s average of $3.76. The decrease is attributed to a combination of increased oil production by OPEC, decreased global demand, and lower crude oil prices. The price per gallon includes about 62 cents per gallon in state and federal taxes!
Chris Herb, President and CEO of the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association or CEMA, said lower gas prices mean families will have more money to spend on food and other expenses this Memorial Day weekend.
“Connecticut families deserve a break, and this drop in gas prices comes at a great time when we gather on Memorial Day,” Herb said. “We are grateful for relief at the pump which allows more people to travel, to connect, and most importantly, to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.”
What you pay in taxes every time you fill up!
The current tax breakdown per gallon in Connecticut includes approximately
- 25¢ in state excise tax,
- 19¢ in gross earnings tax,
- 18¢ in federal excise tax.

The gross earnings tax is proportionate to the price of gasoline and can rise as prices increase.
CEMA, which represents independent fuel retailers and distributors across Connecticut, continues to advocate for policies that support both fair pricing and a competitive marketplace for consumers. As thousands of residents prepare to hit the highways this weekend, the message is clear: this year, Memorial Day brings not just remembrance—but a bit of relief.
