Santa Energy: A Legacy of Trust, A Future of Greener Fuel
For more than 80 years, Santa Energy has been a trusted energy partner in Connecticut’s largest city—powering homes and businesses with integrity, reliability, and innovation.
“Our story started in 1941,” said Peter Russell, CEO of Santa Energy, during a recent episode of Mission Possible: Delivering Greener Fuel Today. The podcast is produced by the Connecticut Energy Marketers Association (CEMA) and hosted by CEMA’s Director of Communications, Shelly Sindland.
“Bridgeport isn’t just where we do business—it’s home to generations of Santas,” Russell added.
From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader
“My grandparents, Stephen and Madeline Santa, took a leap of faith when they started this business,” Russell shared. “My grandfather took on a kerosene delivery route and, after the first day, delivered more than 900 gallons.”
His grandparents lived just blocks from where Santa Energy’s headquarters is located today—a powerful symbol of the company’s deep roots in the Bridgeport community.
Cleaner Fuel, Same Equipment
Today’s heating oil is far cleaner than it was decades ago. Ultra-low sulfur heating oil (ULSHO) burns with significantly fewer emissions, requires fewer service calls, and helps systems run more efficiently. Customers benefit from lower fuel use and reduced maintenance costs—without needing to replace their equipment.
Santa Energy delivers bio-blended heating oil that cuts carbon emissions and supports Connecticut’s environmental goals—all without the high costs often tied to new green technologies.
“We’re helping customers reduce their carbon footprint without replacing tanks or heating systems,” said Russell. “It’s a practical, cost-effective path to sustainability.
Biofuels: A Bridge to a Greener Tomorrow
The heating oil Santa Energy delivers today already includes renewable biofuel components that lower greenhouse gas emissions. As biofuel technology advances, these blend ratios will continue to rise—bringing the industry closer to using 100% renewable fuel (B100) as the standard.
“We can see a future where homes are heated with B50 or even B100 blends,” said Russell. “That’s a bright future—and Santa Energy will be part of it.”
More Than a Company—A Community Partner
What truly sets Santa Energy apart isn’t just its fuel, it’s its people.
After eight decades of service, many customers are more like neighbors and friends. That bond is at the heart of the company’s identity.
Russell shared one story that speaks volumes: “We have a driver who delivers to an elderly woman on his route. He stops at the corner store, picks up a loaf of bread, and leaves it with her fuel delivery—just because he knows she needs it. Nobody asked him to do it. That’s just who he is. That’s who we are.”
Now with the fourth generation of the Santa family stepping into leadership, the company is poised for a strong future, continuing to innovate, serve, and help lead Connecticut toward a cleaner energy landscape.
